How common are stairlift accidents, and how safe is a stairlift?

No stairlift is risk-free, but the main risks are known, and modern lifts have protections built in to cover them. The biggest worry is a fall while getting on or off the seat. A UK trauma-registry study of stairlift injuries (2000 to 2018) found that falls while getting off the lift, and head or chest injuries, were linked to more serious injuries. That study used UK data, not U.S. data.

Bearson Enterprises installs stairlifts in Portland. The Bruno Elite Straight Indoor has these built-in protections: a retractable seat belt, a swivel seat that locks at the top and bottom landings, obstruction detection that stops the lift before contact, a footrest sensor, a key switch that blocks unauthorized use, overload protection, and a slow start and stop. It meets the ASME A18.1 safety standard and is UL Listed.

Simple habits help. Sit fully back and buckle the belt. Turn the seat only after the lift has stopped. Keep the stairs clear. Keep children away from the lift and use the key switch. At handoff, Bearson gives you the owner's manual, a maintenance schedule, and user training.
